Academic Dean Retires

After 14 years of service, Edgar Lee will be retiring as the vice president for academic affairs effective July 31. He will continue teaching in the Practical Theology Department this fall. The AGTS community is appreciative of his commitment, contribution, and faithfulness to the Seminary. In recognition for his outstanding service, the Board of Directors has bestowed upon him the title of Senior Professor. Congratulations Dr. Lee!

Interim Dean for Fall 2002

Richard Dresselhaus has been appointed to serve as Interim Dean this fall. Dr. Dresselhaus pastors First Assembly of God in San Diego, Calif. He is a member of the AGTS Board of Directors and also a member of the Executive Presbytery for the Assemblies of God. Welcome Dr. Dresselhaus!

Warren Newberry will return to AGTS this fall as a Missionary-in Residence. He joins professors Dene Wood, Paul Wood and Barbara Cavaness in the Global Missions Department.

Great News for Returning Chaplaincy Candidates

The Chaplaincy Department has announced that they will be awarding summer scholarships to applicants who have previously received scholarships and have met the age and academic requirements. Awards will be based on the number of credit hours taken (maximum of 12 credit hours). Applicants must have completed a Chaplaincy Department application form showing their intent to become ordained, Assemblies of God Chaplains after graduation to be eligible. If interested, please contact Jan Maempa (417-268-1014) by May 10.

Legal Issues Course

Richard Hammar, legal counsel for the Assemblies of God, will offer the course, PTH 628 Legal Issues for Churches and Clergy, on Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:55-10:10 a.m. this fall.

Faculty News

Ben Aker, Roger Cotton, and Bob Caldwell (MATS student) attended the Annual Central States Regional Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Kansas City, Mo. on April 7-8.

Jim Harris presented “The Problem with Pornography” at a barbecue at Second Assembly of God in Joplin, where men from three Joplin area churches gathered.

Theological French

If you are planning doctoral studies after AGTS and your anticipated program requires French as a pre-requisite language, or if you would like an introduction to French, you should consider taking THE 639 Theological French. The course, designed to prepare one to sustain language entrance exams, will be offered in the fall on Monday evenings, 6:30-9:10 p.m. Robert Turnbull, Chairperson of the Humanities Department at Evangel University, will be the professor.

Late Summer Financial Aid

If you missed the April 1 deadline for Federal Financial Aid, you may be eligible for a late summer loan. Students who apply late will need to make regular deferred payments through the Business Office via personal funds, credit card, or pay their balance in full with a short-term loan from an outside lender. See Marilyn Erickson (417-268-1028) in the Financial Aid Office for further information.

Fall-Spring 2002-03 Financial Aid Deadline

July 15 is the final deadline for all financial aid forms to be submitted to the Financial Aid Office and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 2002-03 to be processed by the Central Processor. Submit your forms and FAFSA electronically to meet the deadline. Contact the Financial Aid Office (417-268-1028) if you have any questions.

Stafford Loan Exit Interview on the Web

The federal government requires all graduates or non-returning students who borrowed a Stafford Loan to receive exit interview counseling. Now you may fulfill this requirement at your convenience by going to and clicking first on the yellow "Online Student Loan Counseling" icon and then on the orange "Exit Interview Counseling" icon. Choose the state of Missouri and AGTS at the start. After you submit the completed session, AGTS will be notified via email. Questions should be directed to Marilyn Erickson (417-268-1028) in the Financial Aid Office.

CE Director on the Road

Randy Walls will be representing AGTS at several District Councils during the month of May:

New MACM Cohort

A new program delivery system is set in place for the first MACM Cohort. Twelve CE students begin the four-year program with the Ministry Development Seminar, May 27-31. The cohort was designed from the example of the Doctoral Department.

Network Partnership Credit Options

Randy Walls and Earl Creps are attending Search Party 2002 in St. Louis, May 15-18. This conference involves bringing church leaders together from around the States and the world for roundtable discussions on issues that postmodern ministry leaders face.

Dr. Creps has prepared a syllabus which provides a two or three credit option. Attendance at the conference is required for those who want to take advantage of the credit option. Go to for more information about the conference and the credit option.

Nursing Home Ministry Update

The Nursing Home team had two opportunities in March to reach out to the residents in a tangible way. They bought the Springfield Rehabilitation Center 10 new hymnals for use at their church services and also prepared and delivered Easter baskets to some of the residents on Easter Sunday.

Summer Chapels

There will be summer community worship and prayer services held every Tuesday of summer school during the lunch break from 11:50 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. in the chapel. Services will start Tuesday, May 14 and will run through Tuesday, June 25 (except June 4). The entire AGTS community is welcome to join in a time of worship, reading of the Word, exhortation, and corporate and individual prayer.

FREE Summer B-B-Q’s

The whole AGTS community and their families are invited to attend our FREE Summer B-B-Q’s (provided by SAC) outside on the “Icthus” patio from 11:50 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. These B-B-Q’s will take place on the following Fridays: May 17 and 31, and June 7 and 21.

Summer Dress Policy

Since summer has arrived, the following dress policies should be kept in mind. Shorts and caps are prohibited during class/business hours: Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and in evening classes and events. The following apparel is not acceptable campus dress at any time: shorts above mid-thigh, tank tops, mini-skirts, strapless sun dresses, exercise clothing, and torn or unkempt clothing, etc. Admittance to the Seminary complex will be denied to students who dress inappropriately. Remember, dressing in good taste and with modesty enhances the appearance of both the individual and the AGTS community.
